    Venice Beach Fossil ID Help

Great trip with my daughter to Venice Sunday, she did pretty well. She found a good size bone and I'm unsure of what a few are. Thanks for the help in advance!
  2. So I have a few days off duty and I'm planning on making a long weekend out of it. I'm starting tomorrow in Aurora, NC at the museum's spoil piles. This will be a first, so any suggestions are appreciated. Saturday I will be going to the Charelston, SC area to try my luck again. I was looking for advice in this area. I have done a ton of research with little success. I don't expect someone to give exact locations to their honey holes but advise would be great! Also anyone interested in joining would be welcome. Finally, a few days of free diving the bone yard in Venice, FL.... That's home! Any advice, suggestions, or anyone interested in joining please chime in. I'll post pics as it happens. Thanks in advance, Justin

    Venice beach unknowns

I don't know what these are. Read about the hunt here: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/76282-florida-22072017-my-best-hunt-ever/ Itm # 1
  4. We had great fun today when we went fossil hunting today! In the morning, we went to the fort drum crystal mine to search for clam fossils. We found several clams and a huge gastropod which needs prepping. The nice owner, Eddy, told me how to cut the gastropod to expose the crystals. He also gave me and my sister gifts. Mr Eddy and me with gifts. Next we went to Venice beach to search for shark teeth. We found 56 ray plates, 26 shark teeth, 1 ray barb and 6 unknown. I will be posting threads in the ID section later. Finds of the day!
  5. Here are my most recent finds from a trip out to Venice Beach. I found a large variation of color of sharks teeth and bone fragments. I also found a small piece of what appears to be some type of equine tooth, a small unknown possibly reptilian tooth, a vertebra, and some other odds and ends. This beach has a very wide variation of fossils and we had a great time hunting. A big thanks goes to JCBShark for lending some gear and giving me a piece of meg to take to my daughter! She was thrilled.
  6. I will be in Venice Beach Sunday through Friday of next week (6/11-16) for a investigations class. I am looking for some easy access locations to do some quick evening fossil hunts while I am in town. I am from Pensacola and there is not much fossil opportunities so I try to find what I can when I'm in other areas. If anyone could help to guide me to some quick spots around Venice Beach it would be greatly appreciated.
  7. These are from near Venice Beach Florida. Are they fish scales, something else, unidentifiable fragments etc? Any suggestions are appreciated.

    help with ?tooth? please

Any thoughts on what this little tooth (I think it's a tooth) might have belonged to? It was found near Venice Beach in Florida.
  9. Hello everybody- first post here: I took a dive trip off of Venice Beach Florida last week and was hoping somebody could tell me what I found. The first three pictures show what I'm pretty sure is some kind of tooth. It's about 3-1/4" long and about 3/8" X 3/4" on the wide end. The second object looks like some kind of to me but i'm not sure. It's just a little over an inch long and about 5/8" X 1" on the end. I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks

    Venice Beach Florida

Found recently at Venice Beach Florida. Any idea what this is - possibly a worn horse tooth?
  11. I never knew that Florida had such a plethora of fossil hunting opportunities. I have visited Venice Beach twice and found fossil shark teeth, fossil plant (most likely Crinoidea) impressions in rock, and fossil shells. I have wanted to visit the Peace River formation for a while now, and I know that there are other spots in Florida that seem to hold some promise. So I'm curious, since I'm basically just starting out hunting for fossils myself rather than buying them, as to what some people who also fossil hunt in Florida have found, and where you found it?

    Any help identifying this fossil?

I found this fossil while sifting sand off of Venice beach Florida. Any help on what it may be?
  13. Happy Almost Summer! I'm heading over to Florida in June with my boys for a change from our Texas fossil trips. The plan is to stay in Venice Beach and make a trip or two to the Peace River during the week. As we don't know the turf, any suggestions on either locales on the river or folks to hook up with to try and get the boys the best Florida fossil experience? thanks, and we hope to see you in Texas sometime! Any Ideas? Jaw With Teeth

Any idea what animal this is from? It looks like a lower jaw with teeth spaced about 1/2 inch apart. It is about 9 inches long. It was found on Venice Beach, Venice Florida. It is well preserved. The color and texture resemble the inside of a conch shell. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Mystery solved ... Cameo or Helmet Shell Just got caught up in the Venice Florida Fossil Bed / Shark Tooth hunting.

    Venice Beach Fossils

I was looking at my fossil collection the other day when I decided to try to identify some teeth I got from a tag sale in Guilford last summer. The seller claims they were from Venice beach. I only could identify one or two because most of them are very similar. I think pic 1 could be a crab claw but I am not to sure on the rest. Hopefully someone here can identify them as it has been bugging me for a while now. Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 Pic 4 Pic 5 Pic 6 Pic 7 Pic 8 More of the possible crab claw aka pic 1
  16. These were all found on the beach at Venice Beach, Florida this past winter. There are 10 different items. I am looking for some thoughts on what they might be. Roughly how old are the fossils? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! #1. This is an interesting crystal found in the surf. It really looks like a maroon-colored quartz. The picture doesn’t show this well. Is the quartz or what might it be? #2 These are bone. Does anyone know why these might be light brown whereas most are black? #3 I wonder if these are pieces of wood. They don’t have the pores that bones do. #4 This seems like bone. It is so wide and flat (5-6 cm across). Is this a rib bone or something? What might it be from? It looks like it must be from something large. #5 These look like turtle/tortoise shell fragments. I find the bigger one front center has an interesting pattern. The one above it also has the interesting curves on the one side and porousness like a bone. #6 This appears to be a tooth. Any ideas what it might be from? It’s symmetrical; triangular from the top and ridges down the side. (Sorry for the not-so-good photo. I could post some others. Let me know) #7 Another tooth? #9 These appear to be bones. I am curious about the cracks and lines/indentations in them. Could these have been broken when the animal was still alive OR did they get weathered that way? #11 These holes are interesting. Are they trace fossils from something, especially the larger one?
