    Greetings From Beijing

Greetings everyone! I am a fossil hunter and a graduate student from Beijing, China. Most fossils I collected is from the Mesozoic sediments in China, composing dinosaurs, crocodilians, turtles, fishes, invertebrates and plants. I do possess some other fossils, including mammal teeth from cave sediments in Southern China. The following picture is a fragment of a theropodian dinosaur from Yunnan, China -- not a recent photo, dated back to 2017. Nice to meet you guys.

  8. As it looks like I won't be able to make it back out to Charleston for quite a while, I was wondering what the fossil hunting scene looks like here in Texas. I've heard that there's some miocene material to be had around Galveston and Bolivar, and I've heard about the Eagle Ford Formation and Post Oak Creek, but I haven't come across a whole lot of information. I do know there are some invertebrate fossils along the Brazos, but I'm not super big on snails. I'm in the Houston area, so a day trip down to the coast is definitely feasible, but I need to do some more research before I commit to making a trip up to North Texas, which seems to be where most of the action is. Can someone just give me a quick rundown on the general information I need to know?
  9. I have a few pleistocene bones and large shell fragments that are fractured, and I'm unclear on the best way to repair them. I've read many topics on the forum about the importance of consolidation and materials to use, and I have materials on order, so I should be able to get started soon. But I'm a little unclear on the process if the bone is in two or three pieces. If you have a completely broken bone, should you consolidate the broken pieces separately first (i.e. in an acetone/butvar mix), then glue them back together with something like CA glue? Or would the consolidant make it harder to piece and glue them back together after they dry? Thank you, Brandy

    Leighton Formation Conodont?

So, I have just found this highly-suspect fossil - my guess is a conodont. I saw it as I was examining pieces of shale, and thought it was worth looking at under the microscope. It seems to have the diagnostic features, even the transition of colors between the blue base and white tips. I was hoping for some of your options on it. If this is a conodont, it would be the first from this formation. My guess would be a Ozarkadina sp - it is a very common Silurian conodont here, and some of the elements look remarkably similar to my specimen. This specimen came from the very fossiliferous layers of this formation, and was found in association with multiple ostracod species (Kloedinia, Londinia, Hemsiella, etc.), T. elongatus tentaculites, and Nuculites corrugatus. This formation is Pridoli, Silurian. Thanks in advance for your help!
  13. Hello, Since all those covid restrictions I haven't got the opportunity to go look for fossils outside of Belgium. So most of our trips from the last year are almost exclusively in the devonian. To get a little change of this I was hoping to find some unprepped vertebrate material, it dousn't have to be complete and I am not afraid of some puzzel work, but the pieces need to be recognisable. I can offer a multitude of different fossils for trade. ( Ammonites, spiriferids, shark teeth, sea-urchins,...) Natalie

  15. Hey guys, First, sorry I've been absent from the forums. After the death of @caldigger I just kinda fell off from the social aspect of it all. It's been a weird year and some change. Covid has effected us all in some form or other, the planet is basically on fire, and politics is eating us from the inside out. I've literally lost friend, figuratively and metaphorically from all of the above. In the time of my absence from the forums, I have been fossil hunting. I've only shared my experience with people that are personally close to me, mostly @Bone Daddy. But, I figured it was time to re-enter the paleontological world. I've just recently secured a new job and before it begins a week off for just myself. Of course, I'm currently spending that time fossil hunting. I've only gone once, which was Monday the 16th of August. But, It was very successful from the word 'go'. I arrived at my white river site fairly early at 9 am. I underestimated the heat of the day, and this particular site has no shade. I was only able to hunt for about 3 hours before my old age surrendered to the heat. In this three hours I found what I think to be a brontothere jaw. These are notoriously brittle, and this site makes no exception. In fact, my horse and kingdom for any of my fossil sites to produce a stable fossil! Anyway, as I arrived I noticed there was a section that I had somehow overlooked in my previous excursions. I immediately headed out that way, and found several chunkasaurus bits and bones...a few big verts, which I always love to find. I began to find scraps of a brontothere tooth, which is fairly common in the area. As I gave a closer look, I found a whole tooth. This is a blessing and a curse considering i've found 5 of these teeth in the area and only managed to obtain 1 of them in salvageable condition. I began the painstaking process of extracting this brittle tooth, while looking around for other pieces that may have been scattered through the ages. I noticed that there were more and more pieces of tooth uphill from the initial discovery. This was odd to me, because usually downhill from the major discovery is where you will find bits and pieces of it. I followed the trail which lead me to the beautiful jaw section. I managed to extract the jaw in 4 or 5 major pieces, but as you can tell from the photos, there is a lot of work to do. Although it is in several hundred pieces, I'm very pleased with the condition of it all. Anyway, here are the photos. Cheers Just replying to follow.

  22. Well, we seem to have a 3-way tie with some very diverse fossils--all spectacular and enviable finds but we need a single winner. To decide on the winner for this month's contest we're going to do a run-off contest among the 3 leading entries. Rather than another 9 days of voting we're going to have this contest run for the next 3 days to decide the ultimate winner for this month. Check the entries below carefully and cast your vote! The poll ends June 14th (midnight EST). 1. Daspletosaurus sp. tyrannosaurid tooth - Late Cretaceous, Dinosaur Park FM - Steveville Area, Alberta, Canada 2. Coprolite - Late Cretaceous, Ozan Formation - Fannin County, Texas 3. Sloth claw core - Pliocene/Pleistocene - Peace River, Zolfo Springs. Florida

  24. I found this broken nodule in an outcrop of Pennsylvanian shale in Northeast Oklahoma. I’m wondering if the fossil could be the upper part of a skull? Other common fossils from this site include fragmentary fish remains (e.g., teeth, spines, dermal denticles, and coprolites from sharks and other fishes), as well as invertebrate remains from ammonites, gastropods, bivalves, brachiopods, corals, and conularia. If this is a skull, would you guess it to be from a fish, amphibian, or reptile? I don’t see any traces of teeth in the nodule, but I can provide closer views of areas that might be of interest. I’ve done as much prep work as I dare with a brush and needle (my skills and tools are rudimentary). I look forward to any thoughts you may have. Best wishes .
