Hello, complete newbie here posting though I have been lurking for some time. I found the pictured today in the San Jacinto riverbed north of Houston. This river is known to have a great deal of petrified wood everywhere, and I've found a lot of it in many odd forms. Other than a baby mammoth tooth I was fortunate enough to find while camping years ago, I have not yet found any fossilized bone. I was wondering if this is bone(feels as weighty as a mineral would) or petrified wood. If bone, I assume it is too deteriorated to tell possible species, I would more be interesrted in knowing that it is, since I am completely knew to this. Since it was so deteriorated, I fractured one tip to see inside. The dark circular area seems to run inside of it and is also visible along one side in a kind of channel. Sorry the pictures aren't great, I will get better!:) Thanks in advance for any opinion you could give on it. regards, Brian

Hi! This was found in a creek in Tompkins county, NY, USA (Devonian period). The shale rock contained these rusty/blackish marks. Is it just rock composition or fossils? Wood? Why is it that fish bones are a rarity in Devonian rocks of Central NY? thanks!

Found something I haven't seen before while hunting in Pennsylvanian limestone a couple weeks ago. I feel like this is poorly preserved plant material but there are not many discernible features, even under magnification. Any thoughts?

Hi! Found this rock on my today’s walk. It is similar to the one I found before and that one was IDed as carbonized wood film. Is this one also wood? Can anything else be learned from this piece? Thanks! Found near a creek, in Tompkins county, NY, USA. Devonian period. The black piece is about 5cm in length.

Hey guys- I was kayaking yesterday near Blue Banks and stopped for a rest and, of course, to see if there was anything interesting lying around. I picked up this piece of what I thought could be fossilized wood, but I'm not sure. It is definitely mineralized, has some very faint slightly radiating lines on the "top" and has a clear pore structure in cross section. Any ideas?

This piece was found in the same stream bed that I have collected petrified wood from. The area in south of the Dinosaur Park in Laurel MD, the stream runs though College Park MD and is close to areas where foot prints of Cretaceous dinosaurs have been found.

I recently purchased this along with a number of other fossils. The only drawback was that there was absolutely no information to be had on them, but I jumped at it since it was such a good deal. Now I'm hoping that somebody out there may have an idea what type of wood this is and where it might come from.

Just read @Bonehunter's post and discussion with @Missourian about an unknown Pennsylvanian plant and it got me wondering the same about this specimen. It looks like wood to me, but I can't find any Upper Pennsylvanian wood that looks similar. I'd love your thoughts on what it might be? I found it near where I found a large tabulate coral specimen. It's from the Bethany falls limestone group. Would that make it drift-wood? What do you think the weird textured pattern on the outside surface is? @digit guess my creek is producing more stuff I can't identify Thanks,

I have enjoyed my trips to NSR and Mineral Wells, but they are a long enough drive from Gun Barrel City that I'm wanting to find closer places to hunt, for days when I don't have all day, or just want to stay closer to home. There isn't much to be found here in Henderson County, but Ellis and Navarro counties, just to the west, are both known to have fossils. I spent some time looking at google satellite images, picked out some likely places to look at, and did some scouting yesterday. It had rained the day before, so while I looked at several possible places to hunt, the only place I actually did some hiking in was a small creek bed that I thought wouldn't have too much water to deal with. It's in the southern part of Ellis County, and it does, indeed, have some fossils. Here's a view of the creek bed, and what I brought home.

Hello all! I am a new member, and this is my first post. Could I please have some help figuring out if these rocks are petrified wood? Most of them were found in a small Pennsylvanian stream. It looks like they are quartz, crystal quartz, but I am no expert. There should be about two pictures of each rock. Thanks for your help, and I have more pictures of different rocks if needed.

Wood fossil found at the Trent River, near Comox BC, Canada. Trent River fossils date around 80 million years (so I’ve read), interested to see if anyone can identify exactly what type of tree/plant this came from. Have always thought it was bamboo, but I really don’t know what I’m talking about. Please let me know if you need more photos.

Dear friends, let me submit a sample from the alluvial sands of Kyiv, Ukraine. Please help me decide: is it a concretion or a fossil, and if it is a fossil, what could it be? May be, it is carbonized wood? As I know, Cenozoic deposits are possible here in Kyiv. In the Paleogene, the territory of Kyiv was covered by the sea (here the bones of the Basilosaurus were found), since the Neogene - land. I applied vinegar, and my sample does not respond Thank you in advance for the tips!

I inherited this specimen among others when my grandmother passed away. I believe it is agate chalcedony pseudomorph after wood because there is what appears to be a vein of Amber in and spilling down the exterior. I have all kinds of photos, but am having issues uploading most due to size.

Hello all Since I can't go to school for a couple of weeks I have time to catch up with some ID's. Most of these plants and pieces of wood have been in my collection for years, thinking it's impossible to ID these because of lack of location. All of these come from old collections without labelling. I know next to nothing about plants or wood. 1: No location at all. Piece is about 10 cm wide. I am not 100% this is actually wood and not just a mineral, but I think these are growth rings. 2: This piece has been in my family for the past 3 generations, without any info. About 10 cm wide. 3: Nothing is known about this piece. It's very heavy. About 16 cm. 4: Also nothing is known about this piece. I think this is called Calamites, but again not sure. It's very long (I have a joining piece so total length is about 15 cm) and thin. 5: Also no location. Largest fern piece is about 7 cm in length.

Hi All! I found what looks like petrified wood near Burro Creek near Wikieup Arizona. There is a lot of rhyolite in the area as well. It looks tree-ish but just looking for an ID either way.

Hello all! I picked up a massive lump of fossil wood from the Eocene London Clay beds in Suffolk, England. Normally I leave fossil wood but this is by far the largest piece I have found that isn’t crushed. Would it be advisable to soak it in fresh water that is changed every day? Any advice would be great fully appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all! I have a series of photos of the extent of my fossil wood findings- two medium sized pieces here, then a collection of small pieces (part 2) and my smoker (part 3), a 25lb "branch"?. All found in the Columbia/Kansas City Missouri area over the past 5-8 years. Any thoughts on potential species/taxa and age would be appreciated!. Part 1 is the two medium sized pieces- the lighter/larger was from Columbia Missouri and the other in KC. I recently bought a lot of 3 unidentified dinosaur "bones" from Isle Of Wight. But one of them have got me in a bit of a pickle. There's not really any cell structure present anywhere, except from one small spot that seems to have some. Which makes me suspect it's wood. But the overall structure of this piece is really puzzling, because it looks like there are sockets or roots from a jaw in it. I hope someone with more knowledge about IoW fossils can maybe explain what this is.

Found this here in western Colorado I have done some looking online closest thing i can find is fossil/petrified palm wood it would be from the Niobrara Formation, Smoky Hill Member and is Upper/Late Cretaceous. What do you guys think? Did a quick polish too quick as you can see all the scratches haha Thanks anyone that can help
