Hi everyone. Found this forum and gotta say - I LOVE IT! I just started learning how to hunt last summer. Anyways, I was gonna be in northwestern nebraska this weekend, and have been looking for places to fossil hunt. One place I saw was the badlands go into the northern part of nebraska near ashfall (which I guess you CANNOT collect it). I've been looking for a publically accesssible place to go to where it is allowed. Does anyone know a place they can recommend? I'm thinking just that general quadrant of the state or so for some mammal fossils. Thanks

Suggestions Needed! Eastern Oregon Collecting Tour
Nathaniel Edmonds posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Hello all!! I am a graduate student at Oregon State University, a geologist by trade, but a paleobotanist on the side (see my publication :https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/721261?journalCode=ijps). I am going to add to my Paleocene fossil plant collections, and am going to make a tour all around eastern Oregon. I will of course visit Fossil (again) for some more Bridge Creek Flora specimens, but do not personally know the area super well. Do any of you have any recommendations for plant fossil locations where I can legally collect? It would mean the world to me, I am trying to make my collection more robust, and hopefully produce some scientific literature from them. I would be open to non-plant fossils as well. I know the Mitchell area has some plants, (Bridge Creek also) and will be in that area, but if any of you have specific spots anywhere in eastern Oregon, I would be much obliged. I understand the sensitivity behind disclosing locations, so if you dont feel comfortable, want to keep things secret, maybe just drop me a hint, I am a geologist, and if put in the right area, will be able to find fossils on my own, I just need some help, eastern Oregon is SUPER big!!!! Thank you!!! -Nathaniel Edmonds- 2 replies

Looking for recommendations for fossil hunting and mineral hunting spots
FinFin posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I'm planning a trip to Washington, D.C. soon. And will have plenty of time for stops. And I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for places to look for fossils and minerals. I'll be driving along Florida's east coast, coastal Georgia, semi-coastal South Carolina, the middle of North Carolina, semi-coastal Virginia, and Maryland. Anyone have any recommendations for good places to stop in these areas?- 11 replies

Where should I be looking for larger hemipristis serra?
Mara_Masina posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hello, I've heard that some locations are better than others for finding specific species. My favorite shark teeth to find are those of the snaggletooth shark, so I was wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to focus my hunting in order to find the serrations of my dreams! I live in PA, but am willing to drive as far as Virginia if I have time and money. So far I've found baby H. serra teeth at Matoaka, but as I'm a new fossil hunter I haven't had a chance to check out other sites yet. Any recommendations? Thanks!- 20 replies

Been a while. Did a few searches and didn't see this already posted. The Paleobiology Database is relatively new, but it is proving to be indispensable as a go-to site for everything fossil. It is an international database and far more useful than MINDAT. This site is likely a bit advanced for the average user, (can be a bit difficult to navigate), but for the pros and semi-pros, it is a goldmine. An account is required. Non professionals can create a guest account. Professionals and Avocational folks can upgrade for free by connecting to your institution and using your ORCID The excellent interactive map mode makes it easy to find research papers by site.

Hi, everyone. I’m brand new here, so, pleased to meet all of you! I’m wondering if any of you know of locations in the US where you can dig for dinosaur fossils (body and/or trace) on a one-day-at-a-time basis and keep some of the material found. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys! I am looking for new areas to hunt for rocks and fossils around the KC area. I have been to the Blue river, Kansas river, Cedar creek, Tuttle creek, Perry Lake, Mill creek, and abandoned quarry areas. Anyone have any general locations of where I can find some stuff? I am an avid hunter for all sorts of fossils and rocks (rockhounding is my favorite past time)! I've had the most luck at the Kansas river and Perry lake. Some of my finds include cow skulls, cone coral, shells, agates, vertebrae, and a bunch of druzy quartz geodes and chalcedony. I have included pics of some of my finds - the petrified wood was sanded down and polished up to 3000 grit. Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!!!!! Much love KC!

Just visited the American Museum of Natural History, and one piece I saw there was a pair of Ordovician Isotelus Trilobites:l (iowensis?) Seeing this, I remembered that Isotelus Trilos were something that I was looking for. Anyone know of a site in/near Georgia?

Recently became infatuated with Labradorite after seeing photos of some nice cabochons made from this mineral in an online sales site. Desiring to find my own rather than buy online, I did some poking around on the internet to see if I could locate some sort of pay-dig site to hunt for myself. Still haven't found a location to collect my own but I did turn up what might be a resource for others--a nice listing (by state) of various locations where you can pay to go collecting. I noticed there are some fossil sites there as well so I figured I'd provide this link here in case it is of use to any of our members for planning a fun trip in the future: https://rocktumbler.com/blog/fee-mining-and-digging-sites/ Cheers. -Ken

Hi all, For us Europeans, Florida is a very exotic place. This may not be your view though, especially if you are from there (as many members here are). Anyways, I am really excited, because this winter (around x-mas) I will be going with my family to Orlando! (the hotel is less exciting: it's the Disney World one ). Anyways, we have a few days to go fossil hunting in one of the most fossiliferous regions in the world. We have already booked a trip with Fossil Voyages, owned by our very forum admin @Cris and his friend Kyle, which I'm sure will be a very exciting moment. But we have still a few extra days free for fossil hunting. We will surely go to the famous Peace River at some point, but having a few extra good hunting locations will be good. Though these may be, in your eyes, very basic/usual hunting locations, I am looking for your favorite hunting spots in Florida. So please jot down in the replies any good locations, and tips you have about them! Any info is welcome (Not too far from Orlando though, we don't want to spend the day in the car). Also, meeting up with some of you, and maybe even hunting with them, would be great too!!! I will, obviously, make some nice reports of the hunts afterwards. Thanks in advance, Max
