Found on beach north of San Francisco. Area has Merced deposit fossils, mostly marine sediments Pliocene-Pleistocene but I believe there are also terrestrial fossils in the area. What is it? It looks vaguely like lichen. or possibly a seed? Part of the attached rock was very black and shiny and flinty and had a sulphury/smokey aroma.

My backyard find, a few miles north west of Long Beach. I found the smaller pieces (which appear to be mushroom, then hit a large rock, removed the rock and saw a corner of this sticking out. Still working on cleaning it with a soft brush as it is VERY fragile!

An odd specimen I have been meaning to post for a while. From the Jurassic Talbragar Fish Beds in western New South Wales. Apologies for not including anything for size reference, but it is 3.5cm long. Perhaps it could be something like a thallose liverwort or lichen? Some other smaller delicate plants are known from the site including Selaginella spp., so they don't seem out of question. Curious to hear your thoughts. A very difficult specimen to photograph, I had to use a pretty week flash from the side to even make it visible, so the photos are quite dark. Thanks,

I am trying to find an easier way to effectively remove green and black lichen from the exterior and crevasses of rock I've collected. Soaking it and using a needle does work, but causes damage to delicate specimens. Does anyone know of a chemical or technique that truly gets the stuff to let go easily?
