My 4 year old son is obsessed with sharks. My husband grew up in the area and said he used to collect fossils at Calvert Cliffs as a kid, so I thought it would be cool to try to find some shark teeth. I wandered around the internet some and found this forum. Watched a video of someone finding fossils and sharks teeth in Florida, so I felt like I sort of knew what to look for. Took the kids to Mataoka today - no teeth for Shark Boy, but Shell Girls found lots of "necklace shells" (ones with a hole all the way through), and everyone had a good time. We could only stay for an hour, but I found tons of fossils. I cannot begin to describe the thrill of holding a literal piece of the earth's history in my hand. It was beyond amazing. I am totally hooked! I'm pretty sure I have some different kinds of bones, some plants, maybe some coral, and some stuff that looks like the little gills on the underside of a mushroom. I can't wait to take a better look at everything and start cataloging! Even more, I can't wait to go back! Or go somewhere new!!! I know the guidelines say not to use all caps, so please excuse me, but... BEACH FOSSILS ARE SO COOL!!!

VERY new to all this - like, started internet research a few days ago. My 4 year old son is obsessed with sharks, so I am taking our family to mataoka beach to look for some shark teeth fossils. I picked up some colanders and sieves from the dollar store to make double level shark tooth sifters, similar to some stuff I saw on this forum. **But how do I know where or which stuff to scoop sift for sifting?** Thanks in advance for any advice - links to videos especially appreciated!

I'm heading to DC in less than 2 weeks with the family. I was hoping to hit up matoaka beach one day when it's nice to look for some fossils and let the kids play it they get bored of it. My wife though is freaking about all the vibrio and flesh eating bacteria stories in the news. I imagine this is quite rare but does anyone have any recommendations on "cleaner" areas to hunt. I'm debating on purse\brownies too when people are chilling at the hotel. I personally am going for it as id like to get some shells and teeth, but also want to make the wife a little less worried, especially if the kids want to go in.
