I’m in the ‘it’s just a rock’ camp but that 1% of me is saying well it looks weird to be just a rock. What do you guys think? It’s flinty / cherty and what I would expect a beach pebble to weigh. It was found at Walton on the Naze in Essex U.K. which is famous for sharks teeth, fossilised wood and the occasional bird bone. Just a rock, right?

Hello all, Found myself here after finding a piece of wood (a root?) eroding out of a 50-ft cliff on the beach in SoCal (usual recent beach bluff of the coastal Pacific Plate). The local Natural History Museum looked at it, gave me encouraging words (but, no, they don't do dendrology) and gave it a coat of Butvar 7.6 in an acetone carrier, and I was looking up that compound when I stumbled upon this site. This place looks like a keeper!
