Hello everyone, I was doing some collecting in the Mahantango formation of western Maryland, which you might know is Givetian in age, and I started finding these strange rectangles or bars with smooth walls. They are definitely fossils but reveal no pattern when viewed under magnification. They differ in size and width. Like most of the fossils, sometimes they have yellow or orange residue upon them. The site itself is grey shale and I assume it to be deep water from from a large Zoophycos in the rock face. I have no idea what these could be, although I have ventured a few guesses, such as graptolite, strange crinoids, bryzoans, plant fronds (some plants have been found here by others), maybe even sections of eurypterids. One I found has a strange theropod shape (positive and negative below), although this could be a different phenomenon. Here's some pictures and tell me what you all come up with!
