I run across these guys frequently in the Mississippian Redwall Limestones around Arizona's Verde Valley. They are generally accompanied by lots of Crinoids and solitary Rugose Corals. They're always this oval shape with segmented structure. They look like an isopod, to me, but could be some other crustacean. Any help out there for the identification of these "bugs?"

This little thingy was in Mississippian Redwall limestone in central Arizona. It was in a section of the Redwall with very few other fossils. It's about 10mm long and 7mm wide. What do you think?

The photo shows several nodules embedded in Redwall Limestone (Mississippian) along highway 89a west of Jerome, Arizona. Also in this layer are crinoids, brachiopods and solitary rugose corals. I think I've read about these in the dim, dusty past, and I seem to recall that they are not fossils, but some other geological phenomenon. Any help?

These fossils are fairly common in the Mississippian redwall limestones of central Arizona. I believe they are rugose corals. Is this correct?

Hey all! 13 years after I made an account, I am finally ready to participate. I live on Kaibab limestone among sponges and shark teeth and have been hunting the Kaibab limestone for a couple decades. I think I have a pretty good representation of most of the faunal found in the rock. I love that the Kaibab has so many different layers of different kinds of rocks and animal communities. It's the nautiloids and trilobites that get me most excited, but I still look at every sponge and brachiopod fossil that I see. Heads and tails!

Hello, I pulled a large rock out of the ground a few weeks ago and I'm now cleaning up some of the small rocks that broke off as it came up. This one caught my eye cause it's got a trilobite but after cleaning I noticed all of these rectangular holes on the side. The lines on the rule are 16th inch. Any suggestions on what would've created rectangular holes like this? Thanks for looking!
