Collecting from the Blue Springs, MS. Coon Creek Member, Ripley Formation
Jeffrey P posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
A little over a week ago I flew to Memphis and then drove down to Tupelo, Mississippi to spend two days collecting at the nearby Blue Springs fossil site, Upper Cretaceous, Ripley Formation, Coon Creek Member. It was my fourth trip there in the past two years. Weather was decent- 65 degrees the first day, 55 the second., a mix of sun and clouds both days. The site was very mucky the first day there, but it dried up for the most part by the second. The first time I visited there, the surface collecting was excellent. Not so much the last three times and this time was exceptionally poor. So, as you can see from the photo, I did a lot of digging. The softer material near the top did have fossils, but normally they crumpled as soon as they were exposed. One particular small nautiloid that was original shell material and mostly gold color was especially heart breaking. As I dug deeper, more intact fossils appeared in the now tougher marl, mostly mollusks with at least some shell material though much of it came off when the rock split.- 30 replies

Because of their fragmentary state they are undeterminable but are most likely in the genus Crassostrea or Ostrea-

Hello, I recently visited this road cut in west georgia and found this 4ft long shrimp burrow that I believe was made by a crustacean. I also found this possible scallop pecten sp. fossil. I will attempt to get the fossil out intact later this week.

Hello, I found this fossil shell in kaolin clay. I was wondering if somebody knew what species it was. The kaolin clay is supposed to be Cretaceous and Paleocene age. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I found this in a Cretaceous deposit near my house. In 1911 a report by the Georgia geological survey said that the area I found this in was a part of the Ripley formation. Sharks teeth, a mosasaur tooth, unidentified fragments of bone, and poor casts of clams and sea snails were found by the geologist that did the report in a grayish shaley clay. I have not found any teeth yet but I’m hoping to someday. I believe this is a solitary coral but unsure either way. It was supposedly found in the same layer that the fossils mentioned above were. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello, I found this on a dirt road next to an exposure of a late Cretaceous deposit and I thought it looked like some kind of branching coral of some type but I’m not sure any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello, I recently found this in a Ripley formation exposure near my house. I think it is a crab or ghost shrimp burrow of some kind but I’m not sure exactly if it is or not. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Finished preparing this big old crab a couple of weeks ago. Easily the most difficult prep that I've attempted because of spotty preservation and pyritization. Estimating that I spent about 240+ hours on prep and it is still ugly. Have not been able to ID yet, but hopefully there is enough detail to come up with an ID eventually. What do you think, Alex? Was enclosed in a nodule that was broken. Collected the larger piece in February 2019 and the right cheliped in September 2018. The carapace is about 8.5" long and 8.0" wide. The chelipeds, measured along the outside edge are about 22" long and are about equal in size. Attached are a few photos. Collected from the lower Ripley Fm., Upper Cretaceous (Late Campanian) in south-central Alabama, USA.

I found this isolated fossil in a creek bed in the southeastern U.S. It is in "as found" condition. Found in the Ripley Formation (Maastrichtian). Does anyone know what it is?
