    Hello From Las Vegas

Hello everyone I am from the outskirts of Las Vegas!
  3. Sereenity

    Welcome, me :)

Goodmorning all! Here to introduce myself to this forum. I am Serena, 36 years old from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Since 2 years I am an active (but amateur/just for fun) rockhounder. Unfortunately I live in Holland, so to be a rockhound means to get quite creative So I always look forward to our holidays in different counties, to extend my rock collection. Roaming the area for Agates is my favorite Nice to meet you all!
  4. Howdy! I've lurked without an account on this forum for a very long time and I figured I may as well make an account. You're all so helpful and I find myself coming back time and time again. I've been rockhounding for as long as I can remember. Starting with my grandma taking me along on her hounds when I could walk, to me picking the hobby back up myself. I live in Wisconsin but visit Minnesota frequently, and I definitely have quite a few favorite hounding spots - but I want to learn and know more! I know this is a fossil forum but I do gotta say - I'm a sucker for a good Lake Superior Agate. We've got some beautiful stuff here in Minnesota, that's for sure. I'm excited to be part of this community! ~ J

    Hello from Texas!

Greetings to all, I am happy to be here, and enjoy all the amazing knowledge shared by you all. I'm Adam, or SCM for short. I am just some guy who enjoys collecting little information time bombs (rocks). The Fossil Forum is one of my favorite places to discover and learn about fossils. My goal is to learn how to take better pictures to share with you all. Until then, here is a couple pictures of my first find in Comal County. Who else likes wood?
  6. Hello all, I live in Washington state! I recently discovered fossil hunting/rockhounding and during some online research, I had stumbled upon this forum multiple times, so I decided to join! As of now I don't have much experience with fossils and so on, but I hope to go on my first search soon! My first big goal would be to discover a well preserved crab. Thanks for reading!

    Hello from Phoenix, Az

When I was a kid growing up in Phoenix I told myself when I'm old enough I'm gonna climb every mountain to the top I could see from my parents house. Got a car at 18 before I turned 19 mission accomplished.

    Help identify please

  9. Hello everyone! I'm so happy to find such a thriving community here, and I'm especially excited to explore and possibly contribute to the reference museum. Earlier this year I moved really close to Lake Michigan, and now find myself a newly avid beach rockhound and fossil collector. I still don't know a lot but I love learning. So far I do know that a great deal of what I find are stromatoporoids (hence the username), along with some favocites, syringopora, halycites, tetracoral, crinoids, and brachiopods. The area where I live is silurian rock I think, and the composition of most of the fossils I collect is chalcedony rather than limestone. So, "agatized." They're often very colorful, have sharply preserved details contrasting parts that are translucent and opaque, or contain pockets of crystal formations. I don't find a lot of images of similar things online, so like I said, I'm excited to share. Looking forward to future discussions and also learning from people around the world Just for fun, here's a photo of the beach l visit most often for collecting:

    Involuntary Rockhound

My dad, Marvin Mabbutt, was one of the early rockhounds in the American west. He put down the first set of tire tracks on roads that are now maintained by the county. And he picked up a lot of beautiful agates and jaspers back when there were a lot to be picked up. Regrettably, that is no longer the case. As a very early rockhound, he became a good friend of the head of the geology department at the local college and a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum. (Now, the Utah State University Eastern Prehistoric Museum) -- mainly because he donated a lot of really great fossils to their collection. Can you say that Cope and Marsh were really that much different? I know that many of you don't appreciate what rockhounds have done to eliminate the smallest trace of fossils from thousands of square miles of desert land. I didn't do it. My dad did. I invite discussion on this interesting issue if you like. My life went in another direction. I became an engineer and had a career in computers. My main interest in joining this forum is to identify rocks so I can be more accurate in describing them. But I also want to learn some of what my dad knew about geology and fossils.

    Fossil ID

Hello, looking for assistance in identifying the recent find. Many thanks in advance!
  16. Hello everyone I have always loved finding anything old or ancient whether it be fossils, interesting rocks, native American artifacts and I could go on! I find most of my finds while metal detecting. No matter where I go most times my eyes are focused on the ground for my next find. One of my favorite things to find is petrified wood. Look forward to talking and sharing with the community! Thanks The picture is of some of my finds so far this year.

    Utah Rockhound here

Hello everyone! Very excited to have found this website and finally meet some like minded people. I've been building a collection for the past 3 years and would LOVE LOVE LOVE some help with identification. I have found some very cool things (I hope) out in the back country. I'm obsessed with minerals too!! If you're a rockhound in Utah, let me know! Always looking for like minded people to share my adventures and passions with. I look forward to getting to know you all. Let's get to learning!!! Again thanks to anyone who can help me identify things.. Trying not to post too much at once. haha -Trenton
  18. Okay so now that I have found a group of individuals to help me identify.... I would love to know what find of petrified wood I have collected.. species and mineralization would be helpful. I have stuff that I can't find online. I'll start with the first two that I can't even tell if they are wood or not... All help is incredibly appreciated. Found these two river tumbled pieces south of Green River, Utah. Jurassic I think? Very different from everything else in the field.. Looks agatized? Thank you! Trenton

    Hello from Alberta

    Greetings From Oregon

Hi folks, by way of introduction I am a retired guy with way too much time on his hands and a brain that is definitely out of step with an old body. I found my first fossil in my backyard when I was four years old. It was also my last find for over 65 years, or around the time the first sentence in this intro sunk into my thick head. The first find has long since disappeared but the interest in all things hidden has reemerged. I guess that is my way of saying that for this person the hunt is as, if not more important, than the finding. Still, it's hard to "jump start" an interest when mobility is lower than native curiosity, if you know what I mean. I am hoping to travel into eastern Oregon soon on a collecting trip. In the mean time the Oregon Coast has attracted my attention as a fertile "hunting ground" and I plan to improve my knowledge of local sites and finds. I also am a member of the Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals and debating whether or not joining NARG (North America Research Group) as well as extending my scientific interest in both mineralogy and fossils. I hope to answer as many of my own questions as possible, but I also am very much interested in learning from others and sharing what I know. I am looking for a collecting/exploring friend and am well equipped for field trips - at least, I think I am well equipped. But perhaps I can learn more about gear, collection and preservation techniques, and maybe making a friend or two in the process. I hope to hear from members within and outside of Oregon. Good Hunting! John

    Hello from Utah!

Hello! My name is Ann Cooper and I wanted to stop in and introduce myself. I am originally from Indianapolis, but I have lived in Utah for 20 years. Growing up in an inner-city, I did not have much access to the outdoors, wildlife, nature and ancient life sciences. However, I always knew deep down, that I wanted to explore and discover the things that came before me. I eagerly thumbed through books on dinosaurs, fossils and similar sciences. At the age of 8 or so, I can remember digging a small square in my backyard and setting up a grid to log what I found. A school field trip to a State Park in Southern Indiana fueled my passion to find more when I saw large areas of limestone and was allowed to take a piece home with me. I had never seen anything like it. Today, I am just as excited to find those pieces of our ancient history as I was as a child. Hope to get some fossil identifications as well as possibly provide some insight as well.
  23. Hi, can anyone identify this? Thanks.
