On a recent geology bus tour the topic of the cabbage rocks of The Big Woods came up. Geologist Jeff Broberg stated that they were giant stromnipoid reefs left over when the surrounding limestone dissolved away. This is the only known picture of them that I can find:
There are supposed to be 5 in the Big Woods on state land.
About 20 years ago we were on a horseback ride in that area and they are spectacular in the landscape! As there are a couple of thousand acres in this area of intensely rugged terrain, I am currently attempting to get a local to take me in to photograph them.
Ordovician, Fillmore County, MN, Galena Formation, there must be something in the literature about these formations. Does anyone have any information?
Thank You! Bev :-)
