Lizprice36
I know its highly unlikely but the more I look at this the more I'm convinced it's a fossilised skull. It seems to have a clear line where mouth should be and it's very symmetrical. Any help with identification (or refution) would be greatly appreciated. grandpa
So, first things first Liz - let me extend to you a warm welcome to TFF from Austin, Tx. May I add that you have found the best forum that I know of to present such questions and get expert answers from folks who welcome neophytes and are happy to bring them along in the hobby. Oh, and by the way, I'm not one of those experts so we'll wait a bit and soon they will chime in with professional responses. Having said that, I definitely see what you see in the similarity of this rock to the shape of a skull. No doubt, it sure looks like one. However, I don't see the surface structure that would convince me that this is a skull - no details that say "bone" that I can tell. But again, I'm no expert; we'll wait for the actual experts to chime in. In the meantime, again - Welcome to the forum, we look forward to you're continued participation.
caldigger
Can you offer some information as to where you found this and a few clear pictures from different sides with some brighter lighting would help. You are shadowing the item in this picture.
Fossildude19
Cropped and brightened: I'm thinking suggestively shaped rock, but other photos may change my mind. 3 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." BlueBackCrow
Hi Lizprice36 To me it looks like slag from smelting metal. All the pockmarks are from escaping gas.
