I’m currently on vacation in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and found it on the beach here, it was found in Quaternary period rocks.

I would not rule out that this whatever this may be might also be modern if it washed up on the shore.

Gently tap it against your front teeth (after properly cleaning). It may take some experimenting, but I find the sound it makes is a good way to tell. If it's a fossil the pitch will be higher and it will seem to strike harder because it is denser.

It makes a higher pitched sound!
