Was out to Birmingham to drop off friend at the airport. Flights were cancelled so decided to go fossil hunting at wrens nest in dudley.

Found close to nothing after 2 hours.

We knew something was wrong so we decided to take a look around. We eventually found the spot but could only spend an hour there.

Heres what we found.

and my favourite finds are these two trilobite tails (not sure if that's the right term to use for this).

I love Wenlock fossils, nice haul of corals and bryozoans.

My post above may possibly help with some ids.

Or not.

Ah, I do know the brachiopods! :)

Trilobite tails are known as pygidiums.

Nice finds.

I think these are Calymene.

You could always go fossil-hunting ;). I believe you have some excellent locations near you. Penarth, Lavernock, Aust and the Somerset coast. :)

I guess so.

I'm doing subjects at home during the weekdays as I don't want to become dumber and forget things over the break.

However, I don't like doing work on friday so i've just extended the weekend.

an extra day of fossil-hunting.

  • 3 weeks later...

Nice specimens, well collected. The trilobite pygidiums  most probably belong to the genus Proetus.  I live only an hour and a half away from the Wrens Nest, less than an hour from Wenlock Edge so I am rather spoilt for choice re the Silurian. Whilst my interests lie in bryozoans the sheer diversity, quantity and quality of preservation of the invertebrate fauna is somewhat spell bounding. Knowledge is the key for finds, some horizons have a more abundant fauna than others, and some exposures attract more collectors than others eg. the fossil trench.  Here is typical mortality plate.
