Hoyter
Can anyone tell me what this potentially is? Found it on a tributary to the Yellowstone River near big timber, Montana. Appears to may have been wood at some point but is petrified or fossilized now. Thanks for any input. I realize that this is not the best picture or description. Rockwood
This looks like a concretion. Some concretions are formed around a fossil. I sort of doubt this one is, but other folks who are familiar with the area may think otherwise.
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Due to the mineral veins running through this, I would say it's probably a septarian concretion/ nodule. Hoyter
Here are Couple more pictures. The defined lines where the “round part” and the “stick like” part meets makes it look as though one grew through one or around the other. thanks for all the comments. Very cool septarian concretion though. 1 Lori www.areallycrappystory.com/fossils www.facebook.com/fossilpoo
Mark Kmiecik
Septarian nodule/concretion. Definitely collectible. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
Hoyter
So the general consensus is that this is a septarian concretion/nodule. thank you all vey much. I’ve looked into these on the internet a bit. In all of your educated opinions, what do we think that that inside of this thing looks like? thanks again. Yup, should be the same pattern all the way through, minus the wear and relief caused by erosion. Don't break it open. Nothing inside that's worth it and you'll only ruin a very nice specimen that Mother Nature took at least thousands of years to create. The Beatles said it best: "Let it be". 1 Mark.
