Bonehunter
Here is my next one that, as best I can tell is mineralized/geode-type horn coral? Also found in the St. Louis area when I was a kid. Am I correct? thanks!! Bone
Fossildude19
Looks more like a root cast or infilled burrow to me. Not seeing any rugose coral structure. 3 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Bonehunter
Great!- thanks- I thought possibly the septa were mineralized out. Burrow or root sounds more fascinating anyway!... Bone
Bonehunter
This is one my "true" horn corals, also found in Kansas City- just thought the conical shape of the larger find was simply a heavily mineralized coral, but I defer to your expertise!- thanks again! KOI
I agree with Fossildude19. You should see septa or some kind of central structure. My guess it's likely an elongated geode or probably a fossilized sponge. Here is video with horn corals for comparison:
TqB
It could well be a coral - centre structure isn't always visible in a given section and can be dissolved out and recrystallised too. Septa can be very short and almost hidden in the dissepimentarium - there are what look like bubbly dissepiments in this area, but clearer photos and maybe sections would be needed to be sure either way: Tarquin
