Hey guys, I saw this tooth listed as Kryptops tooth, seller says it was found at Elrhaz Formation of the Tenere Desert of Niger, and it could also be from the Afro minus or Eocarcharia. What do you guys think?

To me, does not seem to have typical preservation of Elrhaz Formation fossils.  A white/yellow would be more typical of the Kem Kem beds, the Elrhaz Formation is typically a gray or black with a few rare exceptions.  I would expect this to be mislabeled as a Kem Kem tooth.

Definetly not Eocarcharia or any carchardontosaurid, this is an abelisaurid tooth.

Here is what one looks like and you can see the difference in preservation  but it still could be one depending who the seller is and where he obtained his material

That color is typically not Niger.  Ask the seller where it came from.

Well I have this tooth (c.f. Spinostropheus gautieri) which has a similar preservation to @Dino1's tooth so I don't think that you can go by the preservation "not being typical" of the formation. With that said though, my tooth according to the seller is from the Tiouraren Formation so I think that's mainly lighter preservation. It's very likely the preservation could vary.

Hey All,

This is my tooth.  The person I purchased it from said it was from the Elrhaz of Niger but upon further research I agree with @Jaimin013 that it is most likely Jurassic Niger, looks very Tiouraren Formation. The dealer I purchased it from is reputable but likely had the region/formation mixed up.  I included a couple other photos of teeth I purchased from the same person that came from the same region to show the black/tan color pattern on the enamel.

I really appreciate the help with all of this, its great to know going forward!

When it comes to the provenance of teeth from South America, Madagascar and Niger I caution everyone to be very careful and suspicious of anything provided by sellers.  Not that they are trying to be deceptive I just don't think there is a good process to follow these teeth from Digger to Dealers (s) to Collector so its a wild card.    Its also best when looking at preservation to cite publications that are pretty accurate and not what is in personal collections that can be problematic.

Thank you Frank!  I know it is difficult and nothing is 100% unless, like you said, digger to collector.

Is the Tegama Group part of the Tiouraren Formation and if so what is the relationship?  Why the distinction?

And as always, thanks again you for the help!

I did not notice that its from a different paper that I cited.  Not sure what that means the paper I did cite says the material was found  in the Tiouraren which was under the Tegama Group which makes sense.

Hey guys, I know I did a post on this before, but last time this tooth was listed as a Kryptops tooth, now it’s listed as a afrovenator tooth. I know afrovenator tooth is very rare, what do you guys think?(sorry for having another post on this)

I’m no expert but that kind of looks like one of the abelisaurid teeth from Morocco :). So no, not afrovenator I don’t think.

I don't understand why there needs to be another topic on this tooth. In the previous thread, there is discussion with the seller about the likely origins of the tooth. In the listing, the seller further explains his reasons for believing the tooth came from the Jurassic beds in Niger and not the Cretaceous beds in Morocco. And finally, the seller never claims the tooth is an Afrovenator tooth: "There are only a few theropods identified from this formation but this could be from an Afrovenator but hard to say for sure." Leaving all this information out of a new thread comes across as somewhat dishonest.

@connorp, in online the seller has now listed it as afrovenator tooth, and yeah like you said it could be from different theropods so I wanted to know if anyone on the forum would know which theropod it’s from or most likely which one.
