Scol
Hello all! I found this along Topsail Beach in Surf City, NC. Definitely not like any tooth I’ve picked up before and was hoping for some help identifying. If I need to get better pics let me and I’ll try again! Thanks so much for looking! Al Dente
I find these paired teeth in Oligocene through Pliocene sediments. The elasmo.com website identifies similar teeth as coming from goose fish or American Angler fish. Here’s a picture from the website.
Rustdee
The tooth in question looks like a mammal molar to me. Could it be that what we are referring to as "teeth" are actually roots?
PODIGGER
I think Rustdee is on the right track. My first impression was some type of mammal tooth.
Pterygotus
I agree, mammal.
thelivingdead531
It has a mammal vibe to me.
old bones
I agree that it looks mammal. Can you take some more pictures close up? I tried to enhance your photo, but we really could use some more views.
Randyw
I’m with rustdee. I think the pointed parts are the roots. I’m in the mammal camp
Al Dente
The parallel striations is consistent with this type of fish teeth. Here are three examples (sorry for the poor photo) from an Oligocene quarry.
Scol
Very interesting! Thank you everyone so much for the input! I guess I’m so used to finding sharks teeth I just didn’t think of any other option. I tried to take better pictures and if you need more or if they aren’t that good let me know and I’ll try again!
