Zarn
Any thoughts as to what this could be? Could it be a crinoid?

Fossildude19
Could be a brachiopod or two, or a gastropod. Not enough showing to be certain. I may try and carve more out but am reluctant to damage what's inside..

Strepsodus
My guess would be gastropod.
Fossildude19
I think a chisel placed on the noted cracks, and a few hammer taps could reveal more of the specimen. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Mark Kmiecik
I'm leaning towards gastropod as well. I had many specimens like this in my collection when I was a youngster. This type of rock is common in Illinois and the surrounding states and the matrix is riddled with an assortment of species. I cracked many of them open to see what else they contained and was disappointed most of the time. However, a few yielded some very impressive specimens. Don't chance to ruin what you have in favor of what may be had until you have duplicates than can be sacrificed. Good luck. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them! Ludwigia
I'm thinking gastropod as well, but am I also seeing what looks like a crinoid stem on the left in the pic with the tape measure?
