Hi @Tidgy's Dad I found your very Informative  Silurian thread. Would you know where I can aquire some some silurian Wren's Nest reading material to cross reference some fossils I have from the location please.

Here it is.

I'm very glad you have found it useful.

ADAM'S SILURIAN

Though I'm afraid it's not nearly finished, I've only done the Wenlock corals, bryozoans and a couple of sponges. but not added any of the brachiopods, molluscs, crinoids or trilobites, though i have identified about 20 species of these so far, I've got to finish prepping, photographing and posting them.

Got rather waylaid with a lot of Ordovician wonders that I'm still working on. And one or two Cambrian bits.

Not really got much at all about the Wenlock as such, I id by going through individual papers on each of the types, endless cross-referencing, looking at photos on Google, checking Google Scholar papers and so on.

Seabed-fossils-of-the-limestone-of-dudley-1.pdf is the only one I have saved and it's pretty basic.

I use H Milne Edwards old "A Monograph of the British Fossil Corals" for my tabulate and rugose specimens and then go through hoops to make sure the names haven't changed. Which they usually have.

Everything else is just hard work, though I know a lot of the brachiopods.

Thank you for your reply @Tidgy's Dad I agree its certainly hard work researching this material, but enjoyable when time allows. I'm still currently furloughed until maby end of June. I'll post some photos as I go along, unfortunately some of these Silurian fossils I've acquired have no exact location. But they are from the Wenlock Limestone Formation.

Yes, that makes things a little harder, as some species are the same but others different in, say,  the Forest of Dean, the Malverns, Wenlock Edge and Dudley itself. A lot of my starting points come from ids I made at the time of my collecting there between 30 and 40 years ago, though I never did get to the Wren's Nest, but thankfully, kind sorts have sent me specimens from there. :)

Oh, and yes, it can be fun.

I've been trying to id some brachiopod fragments and a tiny thing I thought was a sponge from Sweden for the last 16 hours pretty much non-stop. I think I've worked out that the sponge is actually a bryozoan and the brachiopod I'm still working on. :headscratch:

Some of them are real head scratchers aren't they. Especially all the variations of brachiopods, I'm finding it difficult to photograph them as well. Trying to settle on a decent orientation of the fossil is giving me a headache.

Yes they do don't they and are very photogenic, If there is some attached to a fossil I'm photographing I always try to take a photo of bryozoan as well.

  • 9 months later...

If you are still interested and haven't seen it yet, I have updated my Wenlock bryozoans, some of the corals and added brachiopods.

Might be of some use. :)
