Fossil ID

I would appreciate an Id for this item, I found this on the coast about 15 years ago

I can see why one might wonder if it is dense bone, but I'm afraid it looks like a chunk basalt.

Definitely more like a preserved bone, internal webbing and canals are very visible in person, i was thinking it could be a whale vertebrae i will try and get a better picture tomorrow not at all basalt as the local basalt in the area is reminiscent of pillow lavas/ glass like and is a very black colour this was found nearby https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12236950

From that what can be seen, i would say it's a (waterworn) vertebra. No signs of being basalt here....

I don't see them in the photo. 

The material shown in the article doesn't look like the whale bone I've collected either though, so maybe it's a different preservation. :headscratch:
