This piece was found while surface hunting in a field near Boone, Iowa,  USA,  It measures approx. 6x3x2 cm

Very bizarre find.  I can see why it caught your attention.  I'd say ammonite is a good guess.

I agree.

Seems to be a segment of an ammonite whirl showing ribbing and tubercles.
