BonuFrailman
Hey all, Looking for some help on this claw fossil from China. Unfortunately the seller does not know what formation it’s from, they just say Northeastern China. Claw is 1cm x 0.5cm x 0.3cm
Mike from North Queensland
I suspect its not a claw as the blood groove should follow the shape of the curve in the specimen.
Jaimin013
Im not sure that its not a claw. Don't see a blood groove which follows the shape of the claw either.

Any idea of what it is? Could it be a fake?
Jaimin013
I don't think its fake but unfortunately not sure what type of claw it may be if is one. Just curious and may help others to ID but does the seller have pics of this side?
Troodon
Any idea what age this is ? Could it be modern. Looks like a claw but given its size and no provenance identification may be difficult. I doubt anyone would fake something this small.

The seller says “It’s from Northeastern China and a Jurassic period fossil” but obviously Northeastern China doesn’t narrow it down. They don’t seem to know what a formation is so not really too much to go on.
Troodon
I would be very suspicious of that Jurassic claim.
Jaimin013
I found the listing and its advertised as a Compsognathid hand claw. I compared it to another fully articulated skeleton of a known compsognathid and the claws don't compare to this item that you have listed. I doubt its what the seller has claimed it to be albeit them saying it has been verified by their expert. The description says something ALONG THE LINES OF just because you haven't seen a dinosaur claw from other parts on earth does not mean all dinosaur claw in this world should be the same looks, size, or colors isn't a good reasoning for saying it's a dinosaur claw. The best we can do is compare it to known specimens. I would pass.

That may be an explanation for the given age of the piece ? Beside that the piece looks odd imho and afaik no compsognathids are known from Yixian-Formation....
