dhiggi
I took my daughter to the Natural History Museum in London last year and the highlight was seeing Mary Anning’s ichthyosaurs, so we’ve been planning this week away ever since. Unfortunately we haven’t found any bones yet but we’ve found a few nice samples that I’ll get up here once we’re home. Here’s a few pictures from today’s walk along Monmouth beach, hunting in the land of giants!
PrehistoricWonders
Wow! Looks fun!!! I want to find associated Ichthyosaur fossils so bad, but it’ll probably be awhile. Is Lyme Regis on the Isle of Wight?

Is Lyme Regis on the Isle of Wight? No, it’s on the south coast of England, in the county of Dorset. We have managed to add a couple of nice Ichthyosaur bits to my daughter’s collection from some of the great fossil shops down here though
Tidgy's Dad
Terrific photos. I don't usually miss the UK, but i do miss collecting at Lyme and Charmouth. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

Thank you. We haven’t had the success we’d hoped for but it’s still been a good trip. I suppose a combination of busy beaches, summer conditions and us not really knowing what to look for are the reasons for that. It was great to see the giant ammonites today, even if I couldn’t carry back the ones my daughter wanted!
dhiggi
Yesterday, by contrast, the weather was awful; non stop, sideways rain right up until lunchtime. Luckily it eased a couple of hours after high tide so we went from Seatown towards Golden Cap. Not overly productive; a few nice belemnites, the living chamber of what would have been a beautiful ammonite had it been whole, and a nice piece of coalified wood were the highlights. I’m not sure what the outline in the fifth picture is but it was at least interesting enough to take a picture. The sixth image looked enough like a leaf to make me pick it up and keep it, but I’m guessing it’s just geological
dhiggi
Some of the things we picked up on Monmouth beach yesterday. I’ll probably leave the large black bivalve(?) as it is. Maybe try to get the gryphaea(?) out of the matrix. And I might find someone better equipped than myself to prep the ammonite.

erose
Darn. My daughter and I were supposed to be there this month. But everything was cancelled and hopefully we will be there next year for the belated wedding party that has yet top happen. When my daughter was 10 she had to write an essay on a woman in science. I helped her research Mary Anning. We were also planning on spending an entire day in the BMNH. Hopefully we will be there next year post vaccine. Great pictures. Looks like it was a great place just to wander about with a camera.
FossilJen
Wow! I can’t imagine being able to go someplace with huge fossils like that just lying around! My husband is from England (South Yorks), but we’ve never visited that area. Next time we go I’ll have to talk him into a detour

Slightly disappointing that the Lyme Regis museum was closed due to covid, but the shops in Charmouth in particular made up for that. Yeah, the giant ammonites at Monmouth beach are an amazing sight

dhiggi
A nice early start for our walk past Charmouth (hidden by that bit of mist in the gap between cliffs) Our first sighting of a giant Erosion into an old landfill site has covered Lyme beach in scrap metal, pottery and glass. Fortunately we weren’t there to metal detect. Not sure why the council haven’t done more to clean it up
