2 Objects Found @ Big Brook in NJ

My daughter and I found these two “teeth” at Big Brook Park yesterday along with a bunch of cool shark teeth.

It was our first time ever searching and we had a blast.

Would love to know what these are?

Thanks!

Mark

The latter looks like it could be a raccoon tooth. Your first one strikes me as dire wolf but I'm not sure if those are even found at Big Brook.

Thanks BellamyBlake. Having just googled Raccoon teeth that looks to be a fit.

As for the first i couldn’t tell which side was the root side and which was the tooth side. So it may be upside down in photo.

Thanks for the help!

I would wait for other opinions! I've never hunted Big Brook and could well be mistaken.

The tooth on the left appears to be from a coyote or other canid. To my knowledge, dire wolves fossils have not been found in New Jersey.

Hold on - that tooth is over two inches long?? Are we sure they aren't both whale teeth (which would've been dropped by another collector as this is the wrong time period for whales). I see those lines on the the tooth on the right that resemble my sperm whale tooth I found at Calvert Cliffs.

@Mark_D

Please take pictures of the first tooth from directly above it, rather than at an angle.

Take pictures of both sides, and the chewing surface.

Photos of the top of the teeth (aerial view) as well as the chewing surface would be useful in getting a more accurate ID :)

I agree, the canine seems to be a modern/semi modern raccoon tooth, The other seems to be some type of canid tooth, but it seems to be fossilized, which would make me think it’s of scientific significance, I’d send it to Dave parris at the New Jersey natural history museum.

One of them looks like a carnassial tooth.

It is a lower jaw p4 from a canid ... dog,, coyote, wolf

Here is one from Edwards wolf, a small wolf.. 3rd from left.. probably should be thinking coyote or modern dog at this small size

To me it looks fossilized, I definitely could be wrong, but it’s got the look of a fossil.

You might be interested in the photos in this thread... I never identified the small tooth below the level of canis.

Bones and teeth in the brooks take on darker color very quickly.

I would ask the OP how heavy they are?
