Hi there, thanks for your help. My son, eight years old, found this great rock while out on a hike in Central new York. We are trying to identify if it is an imprint, and some basic search is seem to point to a crinoid imprint. Can anyone give us more information about this?

Thank you!

That’s awesome! An early appreciation of the natural world, making lifelong memories, thrill of the hunt in the field and in research, and time spent together. :dinothumb:

Nothing on the back, it is just smooth. We found a few more stones with small crinoid imprints, but nothing like this one. We’ll be back up tomorrow to search for more. This treasure is currently proudly displayed on his dresser. I’ll be sure to return if we find anything else!

What an impressive first fossil! My first fossil was a very tiny imprint of a partial brachiopod, and that was enough to get me started.  I don't have it anymore, but I wish I did.  Your son found a real keeper!  Congratulations!
