Whitby Ammonite

Daughter and I found this in the Whitby area on Sunday; when I looked again at it last night it had already started to crack open so only needed a few light taps. Am I right in thinking it’s a Hildoceras, and can it be narrowed down further perhaps to Hildoceras Bifrons?

Thanks for looking

I think that's correct.

The genus is actually named after St. Hilda of Whitby.

@LiamL

Nice find, it's a good 'un. :)

Agreed, I really enjoy the ones where the negative comes out of the rock. :ammo3:

Nice one. What did you do to it to make it black in the 3rd photo etc (doesn't look black in the first two)?

Thank you everyone..

@Wrangellian, after splitting it I tidied up the part that had been exposed with a wire brush attachment on a Dremel, then applied a thin coat of liquid beeswax to the ammonite to highlight it a bit. It’ll dry a bit lighter than those pics. I saw someone in a fossil shop doing this to a batch of Whitby ammonites before putting them on sale so I do it to any of ours that are good enough for my daughter’s collection.

It’s nice to have a Hildy for the collection at last, around 90% of the ammo’s we find seem to be Dacty’s

Ah, I think Ludwigia puts wax on his ammos also. I don't know about the Dremel.

Yes, it seems like the majority from that area are Dacs, and I've got a couple myself. Haven't scored a Hildy yet.
