Vnaz50
San Antonio, Tx Here is another rock from my yard. I have a list off the items identified on here and I hope you can see where a beginner or someone refreshing may get confused. To me this rock has more than chert and limestone. The last picture looks like grey bacon.
JohnJ
It doesn't look like chert. Try safely breaking off an edge. The way it breaks and the interior rock texture could be useful. digit
Conchoidal fractures likely indicate a high silica content consistent with cherty limestone. Cheers. -Ken
JohnJ
The grainy texture suggests something other than chert. Even 'low grade' chert has a smoother texture. Conchodial fractures are not limited to chert. This looks more like hard dolostone. 2 The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
Ludwigia
I also tend to agree with JohnJ's analysis. Dolostone imho. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Myrmica
If you put on a few drops of vinegar you should get some bubbling if it is limestone, and a weaker reaction if it is dolostone. Chert wouldn't react.
Coco
Hi, @Vnaz50you should indicate titles of subjects a little more "talking", because with titles like this one and labels so little informative, we can not find your subject if we do a search on the forum. The place of discovery, a description or an age when known are better values.
