Rwdrive
Hi all, I recently purchased these 2 bone segments labeled as dinosaur bones from Morocco. They both are solid like a rock and feel dense like a piece of petrified wood. The ends have been cut and polished. They certainly look like bone to me but they are somewhat small. Other than their petrified like feel they look like they could have come from a modern animal. I don't see any indication of tree rings like petrified wood may have. What do you think, are they bone? Could they be millions of years old? Fakes? Thanks for taking time to look at these. 7 pictures for bone 1 below 6 pictures for bone 2 Jeff
Top Trilo
Yep real bone, called a Gembone due to the inside being mineralized which is why it is definitely a fossil. the ends have been polished to leave a shine and to make the bone texture more visible. As far as location Morocco may or may not be correct. Rwdrive
Thanks much for the assessment! I looked closer with a loop and definitely see quartz like crystal in these. Any clues on what sort of bone these may be (leg, rib, etc)? I realize not much to go on..

Troodon
I have no idea what you have here. Most dinosaur bones from Morocco come from the Kem Kem and I don't think they are dense enough to be polished and would only involve those from Sauropods or Croc. Polished bones that I've seen typically come from the Jurassic of Utahs Morrison Fm. that are very dense. There are Jurassic deposits in Morocco but have no idea what don't with bone fragments. These images if they are of the outer surface don't look like bone.
Rwdrive
Those are pics of the outer surface of the 2nd bone. Those final 6 pictures originally posted above are all the same bone segment. The last picture in the series shows the polished end. I don't see anything like tree rings. And in a couple of the small cavities are tiny crystals, so not modern. LordTrilobite
The first bone at least seems consistent with material from the Kem Kem. So I don't have a big problem believing that that bone is from either a croc or a dinosaur. Maybe it was just a piece of nondescript reptile rib and they might have decided to cut and polish it to make it more attractive. The second one is weird. Like Troodon said, the outer surface doesn't really look like bone. Although the cut surface does kinda look like bone. I dunno. Rwdrive
Thank you @Troodonand @LordTrilobite, I will take a closure look, maybe the surface is a crust thats not part of the original bone. I appreciate your expert feedback.
TyBoy
I find that bone fragments are very hard to diagnose and those from Morocco are probably the worst. Good luck
DenverEdge
Saw this thread just wanted to throw my input. Morocco does produce gembone from kem kem but not the same quality you can get from the Morrison formation (usually). It is very similar to the gembone I can find from the Morrison 30 minutes away from my house though. Most the gembone from morocco they turn into tourist pieces like this. Is this the first smoking utensil make out of fossil bone you have seen?
