BellamyBlake
Hi, I have here a Dragonfly fossil from Germany. The fossil itself is just over 3". How would I tell if it's authentic? Thank you, Bellamy
JohnJ
I might be missing something, but this looks like a consolidant enhanced carving. 1 6 The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
Fossildude19
This looks more like "Art" than Fossil. The way to tell is the total lack of veining in the wings, the 4 odd protuberances, and the lack of delineation in the body. 1 3 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Randyw
Oh lord.... um well..... first dragonflies have 4 wings, a longer body and a long tail.... I blew up the pictures as much as I could looking for anything inside the weirdly shaped outline that might even be pieces of a dragonfly but couldn’t find anything....sorry... 1
Thomas.Dodson
There’s a lot of problems as the others have pointed out. I’ll also add that the thorax(midsection) is completely missing and the “legs” and body parts lack all segmentation. While not always visible on fossil specimens I’d also expect visible tarsal claws on such a well preserved “specimen”. If those appendages are supposed to be antennae those are also a red flag and shouldn’t be there.
FossilDAWG
100% fabricated. "Art", and very much in the impressionistic school. I am not a fan of "argument from authority", but I am an Entomology professor and I see not one detail that indicated this is anything other than a carving. Fossildude19
This other one isn't any better. I can make one at least 8 times better, and for 1/2 the price. 2 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." jpc
I might add, not even good art.... but art is very subjective
BellamyBlake
Thank you everyone. My friend wanted one and I was thinking of getting one for him. I don't deal with insects at all. I'm happy that I posted it here!
Wrangellian
If there ever was any sign of a real fossil in there, they have ruined the ability to tell by coating it and adding the etching around the outside. So best to assume it is completely fake (art). I've seen completely fake heteromorph ammonites carved into pieces of matrix from Morocco. Just carved and tinted with iron oxide color to simulate the real ones, but done poorly enough that it was immediately obvious that it was not real. The Moroccans are also fond of etching outlines around faint fossils (real ones), which in my opinion is damage, but that's another matter.
