GarethGP
As the title says, I bought this tooth fragment last year from a retailer who I know has been wrong in identifying fossils before (I corrected them on hippo species). I know it's not much to go on, but do you think mastodon or gomphothere?

Shellseeker
In the parts of Bone Valley where I hunt, Gomphothere is far , far rarer than Mastodon. You got lucky! 1 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
GarethGP
You guys are awesome. Just so I can learn, what draws you to the conclusion that it's gomph over mastodon? I've added two more pics in my hand to see if that changes anything. I've been looking for a gomphothere specimen for a long time and it'd be funny if I've had one this entire time. Think of bumps and flowers, not ridges Unscientific only in the lack of use of technical terms that would be over most of our heads anyway. Gomphothere teeth are bunodont having tubercles (bumps) on the crown whereas mastodon teeth tend to have sharper angled lophs. GarethGP
You guys are amazing. Yeah I can see why you believe it's gomphothere and I guess I just lucked out. Thank you everyone for your input!

GarethGP
To those who were part of this thread and are interested, I contacted a PhD in the field who has specifically worked with gomphothere specimens and he absolutely confirmed what you guys have been saying. Attached is his response. Thank you everyone!
