My Friend's Collection

Kane

Recommended Posts

I was given permission to post the remaining collection of my friend, a fellow collector who lives in my city. This is a guy who had the sensational privilege of collecting the Burgess shales for 10 years, eventually in a capacity to earn his MSc in Earth Sciences. He and I collect on the odd Sunday when he can get through his honey-do list, but he works as a property appraiser now. He also collected extensively throughout Ontario, and even picked up old bottles around Toronto. Lots of interesting highlights here, including an autographed Stephen Jay Gould book, a Walcott specimen card, and plenty of eye candy for those who have collected Ontario in the halcyon days.

Please pardon the photo quality... We were under potlights and drinking much beer. :P

He has some nice specimens there! Does he have an actual Wiwaxia or just the label?  I'm guessing he spent some time in Ottawa based on the fish (probably a Mallotus) and the Triarthus spinosus.  I especially like the brittle star and the larger edrioasteroid (Edriophus? or Edrioaster) but the flats of Pseudogygites and the other trilobites aren't anything to turn your nose up at either.

It's interesting how many fossil collectors also collect old bottles.

Thanks Kane!

I appreciate seeing stuff that I will never get the chance to see in person.

:)

No Wiwaxia... Despite working at the Burgess for a decade, he did not pocket anything.

Yes, you got the fish nodule correct! These days, the nodules are much harder to find.

Maybe it's because many fossil collectors are heavy drinkers; hypochondriacs or both and are thus irresistibly drawn to bottles.:D

Not that I'm suggesting that is the case with Kane's friend Matt, of course.

I'm a fairly robust drinker, but have yet to collect any antique bottles. But I admire your thinking nonetheless! :D

  • Kane changed the title to My Friend's Collection

After many years of association, he and I appreciate our mutual love of fossils and collecting, but humor and friendship dominates. I need to concede, his love of beer humbles my ability to consume, the same. Thanks for the peek at his private stash of fossils.

Lots of neat stuff, especially the one picture with the segmented appendages!  Thanks for sharing Kane.

Lucky guy, getting Stephen's signature before his passing. Probably the greatest paleontologist of the 20th century, I would love to have his autograph.

What's the critter in the 1st picture? I've never seen anything like it.

growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

It is a fish skull of Mallotus villosus in a nodule.  ;)

I thought of something else to say.

Please convey my thanks to your friend for allowing these to be shared here on the forum.

And kindly ask him if he happens to have a full bottle of that lung tonic. :)
