thefloralplesiosaur
Hi everyone! Got this at an auction for a really good price (probably because of the missing portion) labeled as hadrosaur. 66-67 million years old. from hell creek formation in South Dakota. length about 3.3 inches, width roughly the same. I guess it seems a bit too good to be true for me as it’s my first vertebrae specimen and it’s also a hadrosaur which I see commonly running for +. Thanks in advance! Fossildude19
Fossils prices are directly correlated to condition. Complete, well preserved, excellent condition fossils are generally more expensive than partial, poorly preserved, or poor condition fossils. So getting a partial dinosaur bone from a "relatively common" dinosaur for a "good price" is not unusual. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Troodon
Welcome to the forum. Hadrosaurs (specifically Edmontosaurus) vertebrae are fairly common in HC exposures. There are quite a few Edmontosaurus bonebeds in the HC and Lance Formations so complete centrums are readily available and not overly expensive. Like Tim said value depends on quality that includes preservation and completness. So I would not expect to pay very much for your specimen. Its however a great start to a dinosaur collection that is 66myo. You posted it in the ID section so guess you are looking to confirm the ID. Not sure I can but can you post end views, need to see the shape of the centrum. 1
