Jim Kovalchick
Here are pictures of a bone fossil found by my wife at Myrtle Beach. It reminds me of horse fossils I have seen, but not exactly. Can anyone please help id?
Harry Pristis
This doesn't appear to be a horse hoof core (an ungual). I'm not certain just what it represents. For comparison: 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
digit
The flat biscuit-like shape make me kind of wonder if it is not some sort of worn vertebral centrum? Cheers. -Ken
Jim Kovalchick
Thanks Ken and Harry. I can definitely be talked into vert fragment. I will look down that path. I'm puzzled by what looks to be an extra coating, but maybe because I'm not used to what it looks like when it's worn away. Thanks!
Harry Pristis
I don't get the vibe of vertebral centrum. The foramina in that last image give me pause . . . what about an elephantoid ungual. I don't have an image to share. 3 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
digit
I overlooked the foramina--an elephantoid toe bone (or possibly an epiphyseal plate from one) seems like a good route to explore. https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/898687/view/elephant-foot-bones Cheers. -Ken
Jim Kovalchick
Ken and Harry, thanks for the ideas. I like the idea of big toe bone. One hesitation I have on that is that the one end if the fossil that is still partially there seems more flat than the concave ends I think I see in toe bone pictures. I still think that either toe bone or vert part are better matches than hoof. Thanks!
digit
You could also send the images to Richard Hulbert. Part of his job description is helping us (amateurs) with our fossil ID questions and mysteries. https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/museum-voices/richard-hulbert/ Cheers. -Ken
