Wenlock Weirdies II

Wow! The first Wenlock Weirdies thread was three years ago.

How time flies.

These are all from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation, Wren's Nest, Dudley, West Midlands, UK. So Middle Silurian.

1. I thought machaeridian at first, but it doesn't seem to quite fit. Then a possible polyplacophoran?

Not at all familiar with Silurian of the UK, but number 4b and c looks remarkably like Graffhamicrinus crinoid piece.

Interesting. They could well be crinoid columnal pieces, but Graffhamicrinus, and indeed its whole suborder, don't appear until the Carboniferous.

Fascinating beasties, Adam, but I don't think I can add anything to your suggestions!

Thanks for looking, Tarquin. :)

Hi,

I have not been called  :default_rofl: :heartylaugh:  but I can only specify that chitons (polyplacophoran) have obligatorily 8 plates. Adam, you’re in the best position to see those plates. I can't see them... :look:

Thanks my friend, and of course you are correct about the number of plates, though Sempteochitonida of the Palaeozoic had only seven.

I don't think my specimen is a polyplacophoran as, although it does seem to have about seven to ten segments, they all seem to be fused together, not separate as in chitons. It's hard to tell exactly how many and I daren't prep it any further as it is very tiny and thin shelled.

Salut,

Oh ! Realy ? Yes ! But I did't find some pics of Sempteochitonida, besides, it’s way too old for my skills ! :default_faint:;)

I have to agree, I am pretty certain the first one is not a chiton. The potential plates do not look regular enough to be polyplacopharan and the underside views at the end do not exhibit any sort of segmentation that I can see. Unfortunately, I do not have an alternative ID to suggest.
