Gareth_
Hey all A number of years ago I bought this fish fossil and I've never done any digging to find out more about it - until now. This was my 2nd or 3rd fossil I ever bought, it came from a small rock/crystal shop that sells a small selection of fossils. It only had one detail on it when I bought it and that was (if memory serves) it's from the Devonian Period Yep, it's painted... like a lot are. My very inexperienced eye at the time didn't notice that until after I got it home and had a close look at it. The amount of detail is incredible, unfortunately the camera doesn't do it justice. Can anyone offer more information on this fish with the very limited info I gave? Genus? Likely find location? Cheers Gareth
Yoda
In my limited experience This looks like a heavily painted Knightia Green River Formation - Utah Eocene MotM August 2023 - Eclectic Collector
Fossildude19
Yoda is correct, with the exception for the location more likely being Wyoming, although Utah is a possibility. Knightia eocaena, Green River Formation Eocene - Wyoming. (Mini-fish layer?) Dorsal and anal fin are painted on. Tail is not painted enough. These are painted to show off the fossil better. Gareth_
@Yoda @Fossildude19 Thank you both for your reply really appreciate it! I've just taken another pic, there is some preservation of a dorsal fin right behind the painted dorsal fin.... I hope it's visible in this pic (using a magnifying app on my phone) It is a shame they paint fish like this, while it does show the animal much more clearly.... it removes some of the authenticity of the fossil
