minnbuckeye
Yesterday found me exploring multiple Galena/Ordovician road cuts in northern Iowa. Finds for the most part were good but just the common fossils found in this rock formation. However, one rock I examined contained a positive and negative relief of something I do not recognize. Hopefully someone can put an ID to these pictures!!!!!! Positive front Positive back Positive from the side negative imprint Both positive and negative together
connorp
Hmm. Maybe a poorly preserved mold of echinoderm plates? But I'm not sure if this is even a fossil. Interested to hear other opinions.
Tidgy's Dad
I think the negative is actually the positive and that this is a fragment of a fenestrate bryozoan. The 'positive' is a cast of the specimen. 2 1 2 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

minnbuckeye
@Tidgy's Dad Adam, I understand what you are suggesting. But from my perspective, the piece I call the positive is of a different makeup than the matrix. While the piece I call the negative matches the matrix 100%, leaving me to downplay but not eliminate the fenestrate bryozoan theory. Also, most fenstrates I find are fairly flat. tombk
You and I often hunt in the same types of places, and I’ve never found something like this. I’m curious.
