Lorney
Found this bone along the Bow River in Alberta. Would probably be from either the Bearpaw or Dinosaur Park Formation. Seems to be partially mineralized. Is it possible to ID the type of bone and possibly the animal it came from? To me it looks like a vertebra. Captcrunch227
You’re spot on, definitely a vertebrae. It looks an awful lot like some Mosasaur vertebrae I’ve seen and found. Not sure if that’s a possibility in either of those formations though
Lorney
Thanks for the response. There is mosasaur fossils from the Bearpaw formation. I will start looking at those and see if I can match it up.
val horn
My first thought was vertebrae . However it comes to a smooth narrowed arch at one end, and the hole may be artifact or may have started its life as a deep grove. Could it be distal phalange ?
jpc
This looks like a very worn mosasaur vertebra. Concave on one end, convex on the other...neural canal, and water-worn remnants of transverse processes and neural spine. Mosasaur. 1
Troodon
My vote is with the others Mosasaur vertebra. Bearpaw is mostly a marine unit so most likely from there. 1
