diginupbones
My first thought was bison on this tooth but it just looks a little different than the rest of my collection. Possibly camel? DenverEdge
Interested to see what others think. Looks more camel to me than other options does not look horse or a cervid.
Harry Pristis
My guess is this is an upper cheek tooth from a protoceratid, perhaps a synthetocerine. This is a very large selenodont tooth, so that helps narrow the alternatives. Not bovid, for sure, and not perissodactyl. 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
diginupbones
Thanks Harry. It seems like I have to use Google every time you reply to one of my posts Definitely another critter that I never knew existed. Interesting find
Harry Pristis
I am unaware of any common name for "protoceratid" or "synthetocerine." These critters are uncommon and obscure fossils, at least here in Florida, and probably will never have common names. And now, anyone who did some research has become a little bit more knowledgeable. You're a winner who has a nice fossil. 2 1 1 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
