trevorog
Hello all, I have a small baleen whale skull that I need to preserve. It was found on a beach and the sun had bleached it. After a short time it has started to flake, crack and sort of fall apart. It's very aged and porous, is there something I can coat it in to preserve it? Jared C
on the other hand, that sounds like a cool find and I hope you're able to get it preserved. That link is quite helpful. trevorog
they are not great photos but might give you a better idea. I don't think a thin solution of any agent will work.
Sjfriend
The idea with thinner consolidates is the ability to seep deeper into the specimen and hold it together. A thicker one helps where the bigger cracks are. I would want to see it for myself before I would say for sure but I would think soaking it in a thin PVA would work to really allow the solutionto penetrate all the way. Or carefully dripping / brushing enough onto it to allow it to soak deep.
