Worm stampede ?

Found on gravel bar in Trinity River Arlington, TX. 

This appears to be worm tubes, but what were they up to ?

the edge  pictures looks like coral to me, particularly the webbing in some of the circles.

It is hard to tell, even in hand, if they are the same thing as seen on the sides. I sort of assumed the must be the same thing in a different orientation. Why it would look this way. . . :Confused05:

Cool piece! How about a piece of a serpulid reef...seems diff places in Texas and worldwide have reported those cycles/features.

Reef and cycles does make good sense. Like the pattern on the ends represent surfaces, and the more random tubes represent a subsurface aspect of the assemblage after the event which smothered the reef ?
