Is this common?

  I was doing an initial cleaning of this piece to categorize, label and store for future preparation. I do this by brushing the loose dirt off with a natural bristled paint brush and then a quick cleaning with my dust collector to pick up some of the finer particles. 
  This time, while using the  dust collector, a little surprise popped out. My first thought was tube worm, well preserved and free enough for the suction to pull it out. Thankfully it didn’t detach!  
  I was wondering if this is a common occurrence. Has anyone else experienced this? And do you agree that it’s most likely a tube worm?

It's not a fossil, whatever it is. 

Could just be some sort of fibers stuck to the rock by mud.

I would give it a good rinsing and brushing.

Thanks for the responses. I feel dumb but whatever, this is new to me so I’m cool with it. I’ll put more work in before involving everyone next time and I’ll post whatever this is after i finish cleaning it, in case anyone is curious.

It looks like lint or wool, i would take it outside and touch a match to it

Dried clay can be quite stone like. I suspect this fiber in a clay ball. Anyone who collects in fresh marl is probably familiar with them.

There is no better way to learn, than to ask questions.  And, I can definitely see where this would cause curiosity. 

 

We all had to start somewhere. We all once knew nothing about fossils. That is what is so great about this Forum. We are open to teching and learning ourselves.

Please continue to ask about the items you are finding. Please do not feel embarrassed or dumb. There is a definite learning curve, and we are all on it, some are just farther along it than others. 

 

Your pictures are good, and your measuring tape is fine. Keep investigating. It won't take long before you are able to make sense of the things you are finding.

Absolutely NOTHING to be embarrassed about.  Those who have judged should feel embarrassed and ashamed.  I always find odd things when I’m cleaning my finds. For me it is part of the fun.  It is a neat find whatever it is. Thank you for sharing. ✌️❤️
