Hi all,

I found this specimen from a rotary borehole (window sample) at 5.4mbgl within the upper Whitby Mudstone Formation.

I’m leaning towards a shell eating fish, but still unsure from the shape of the rest of the the samples which looks more like a coral?205634A5-9B3B-4178-97DD-9ECA46BB45DA.thumb.jpeg.0df1f807d2b1ca5012dab273b235bd82.jpegDE182B06-8DD2-4D10-9266-E24574EC27CE.thumb.jpeg.b51fe6d444ffb75ae1b5482dc605bfb3.jpeg70A10B56-4BDD-4117-A185-A02624E5948C.thumb.jpeg.078f652e52512934ec85cbccb2f5e61e.jpeg698DD853-E4DD-48FF-9189-D8AFD9C2DA62.thumb.jpeg.8df547202fd98febb9f522b5bd93be09.jpegE6C56F63-C289-4BA3-85EE-73730FD55DA0.thumb.jpeg.b476f88511ea869dbcd8b416aa29a4f5.jpeg5ED386E7-2565-447B-BCAD-4426FF85C8D0.thumb.jpeg.f31a15e45ca0ca7c6b31177435290552.jpegEA3F7AF7-4AFC-439B-B0E0-02B0E26B11D5.thumb.jpeg.a8e5ee3d41a0825ca415f901b93beb2a.jpeg5152849F-10B7-4EEB-9DF4-6BB3BB5A7C99.thumb.jpeg.804d5e97ff38b03ab5dd85085b7f34f6.jpegD307D925-399E-4480-84BC-5DB26A4CE898.thumb.jpeg.e0d50fc66fa573fb9ece0b1a3805bfc2.jpeg

Hi Geo-Reinier,

welcome to the forum.

To me it looks like fragments of an ammonite that fell apart along the suture lines.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can tell you a species.

Best Regards,

J

@herve and @Mahnmut are correct though i  would never say just  an ammonite.  I always hunt for ammonites,  those curved and recurved pieces identify it as ammonite. Nice find,

The Whitby Mudstone Formation. is Early Jurasssic (Toarcian) in age and dominated by Harpoceratid and Dacylioceratid ammonites.
