smbpowers
Hi all, not sure if anyone can help with this. A long time ago (like 35 plus years) I went on a fossil hunt. I was little but believe it was somewhere in New York. We went for a hike in palisades on the same day. We picked these oyster shells and were under the impression ever since that they’re fossilized. They are hard and heavy. I would value any input anyone may have about them. Thanks in advance.
Ludwigia
They do look fossilized to me. If you found them inland, then they probably are. If found on the riverbank then probably not. Rockwood
I see nj in the tags. This sounds like a better possibility. Maybe someone from around there will recognize them.
smbpowers
Thank you for replying. I’ve always been under the assumption they were fossilized. Now that I’m finally able to display my collections I wanted to verify that. It could’ve been inland and it could’ve been nj, as I said I was little, 6/7ish. I know they are oysters, didn’t know if anyone might know how old they could be. Thanks again for the replies, I appreciate it.
Carl
If you found these on Rockaway Beach in Queens they could be Pleistocene. The problem is that almost none of them have any adherant matrix that is the strongest indication that they are fossils. The 3rd photo apparently shows the fine, grey matrix one would expect from there. That one would be a fossil in my book, albeit a very young one.
Rockwood
By the way @Carl would probably know if they were from NJ.

They certainly could've originated in NJ but in my experience they are way more common in NY.
