Out of curiosity - how do you guys know it’s mastodon and not mammoth? I have a few pieces that are similar to this one but I thought it was Mammoth!

Fossils? I dig it. :meg:

There's a picture with a side by side comparison.

Sorry - I specifically meant fragments like the one above. I know the teeth themselves are very different.

Like I found this piece which is quite similar to the one found above - I was under the impression it's Mammoth, but now I'm thinking it's Mastodon. So my question is how can one compare? Same with root chunks, since the root chunks look similar.

Fossils? I dig it. :meg:

@Meganeura, if I am looking at this correctly, the OP is a half of a cone, which mammoth teeth don't have.

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

I suppose it's probably safe to say my piece was also part of a cone then. Not a half - but some chunk of it.

I have no experience here, but the link above to the fossilguy website says mastodon enamel is very rough, if that helps any with your pieces.

It does indeed, because they absolutely are, despite being worn away some by the river.

Daniel,

My photo of a Mastodon fragment from 2015 Peace River... Take a close look at the enamel on the outside of the tooth fragment:

Compared to Mammoth, it is wider,  there is only a single band on the outside, it consists of slanted parallel lines from the inside to the outside of the tooth. Distinctive
