I am amazed by the size of the flora pieces.  I never would have guessed these came from Pit 11.

I need more popcorn!

Cheers,

Rich

He did collect at Pit 4 with Walter and myself from time to time, but I do not recall him finding pieces this big and Walter also had big ferns that he found at Pit 11. In addition, the ferns that I found at Pit 4 were nice, but not as nice as these. He was not one to clean the fossils and they are as the were found. Lastly, he told me that he collected at Pit 14 twice, he may have found some there, but not as many as are in the collection.

NE area of pit 11, up towards the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club had some large flora way back in the day according to some of the old collectors from ESCONI that I talked to in the 90's.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

I was a guest in the 1970's at the home of one of the early collectors and he showed me a "V" shaped concretion nearly a foot long in each axis with a beautifully preserved fern in each axis. their stems touched or overlapped at the bases. The largest I ever found was a one foot concretion with a 9" long segment of Lepidodendron.

Tonight I was dealing with a few more Tully Monsters, a couple Cyclus americanus and a couple unknowns.

Today I work on some of the white boxes that contained Shrimp. Below is an example of what the box looks like.

048CACC2-1398-462D-9463-9F0794AC520D.thumb.jpeg.8ddd7259a6cba1add3bc2cc0251cbd28.jpeg

These fossils were mounted with a sticky material that I believe was used for fake flowers. This is the way a number of older collectors would mount their fossils, and I have to admit that I did the same thing since that is how I was taught, I later turned to White school glue.

When I talk it out of the box, thus what the back looks like.

The above piece has two different pieces of this sticky mounting stuff on it. I then use a dull scalpel to try to remove most of the stuff, see below.

It is a time consuming process and I have never cut my hand- fingers crossed. Just thinking, I may have posted this process earlier, sorry if this info is a repeat.

Now on with the shrimp and shrimp molts, there are a bunch of them.

This evening I decided to go through some worms, here are some of them.

Here is a nice Fossundecima konecniorum with nicely preserved jaws.

I am unsure with these two- don’t believe they are worms, the bigger one might be a lamprey or a Gilpichthys greenei.

Thanks Ben- that is exactly what they are. Thank you very much for that ID, it is an almost exact match to their pics.

I agree.  Definitely a spore/seed pod.

Funny, was thinking of doing a post on these.

Wow... This collection was amazing after the first couple pages... now it's unbelievable, especially considering how hard it is to acquire a decent example of any given taxon through the usual online source. (I know things were different back in the day.)

Interesting how that eye-bar thing could separate from the Tully body occasionally.
