GeneMN
I found this wonderful coprolite in river rock surrounding shrubbery at a Howard Johnson's in Rapid City SD about 30 years ago. I've always wondered what creature may have produced it. Do you have any ideas? Length is 2.75 inches. See images.
Fossildude19
Impossible to tell what creature made a coprolite. If it was found in a specific geologic setting, sometimes you can infer the type of creature that made one. Without knowing the original origin of the item, or cutting it open to see if it has any inclusions, there is very little to go on. The spiral shape may indicate shark, but it isn't exactly in line, and is a wild guess, not really based on anything other than general shape. The lack of visible inclusions could also indicate that it is an oddly shaped nodule or concretion, as well. 1 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." IsaacTheFossilMan
+1000 for Tim - it's relatively impossible to do that. Spiral shape had me at the same conclusion, but the lack of inclusions is also suspect. Does anything in the rock fluoresce under UV? ~ Isaac; www.isaactfm.com "Don't move!
