ancientremains
Greetings! I borrowed this image from the internet for a reference. What is the unpolished matrix that the orthoceras are embedded in, is that fossilized limestone (aka marble or dolomite)?
IsaacTheFossilMan
I never understand the appeal of such carved orthoceras blocks, as the shape they're carved into isn't even where the fossil is, or the shape of what the fossil would be... The fossils are carved and polished from the Devonian of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, Morocco. As far as I know, its marble-like dolomite material. ~ Isaac; www.isaactfm.com "Don't move! ancientremains
Thank you for the reply, Isaac! Since I'm a fossil newbie perhaps I can help provide some insight on the ortho tower appeal. I like the height and the "movement" that it provides for a fossil-scape design. (I'm not a fan of the towers where all the orthos are all vertically straight. With one or two leaning over it creates "movement".) I also really enjoy seeing the substrate the fossils are found in, it gives it a more organic look.
