Found two of these fossils now. Both on beaches that are probably Devonian in age. One is from SW Wisconsin on Lake Michigan and the other is in the Lower peninsula of Michigan from the shores of Lake Huron. Organ pipe coral or some sort of burrow trace fossil? Thanks!

The don't look either to me.

Well, it's basically my backyard material relatively speaking. It seems fairly diagnostically clear as weathered out coral.

They're corals. You can find tons of it all around the shores of Lake Michigan. All heavily water-worn just as these two pieces.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Where ? What identifies it as coral to you ?

I agree with coral given what appear to be evenly spaced corallites.

The corallites are very regularly spaced.

Some if the water-worned corals i find have that look.

Only if you recognize the fact that it's a mold in a rock and not a colony alone.

I know a spot where heliolitid corals practically litter the ground. I had that sort of thing in mind.
